Illinois St. The city of Belleville and the Sept. 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois Committee host a 9/11 Moment of Remembrance Ceremony to honor victims and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The event features a color guard, a brass ensemble and a 35-foot long, 7,100-pound steel column from one of the fallen World Trade Center towers. Market St. Attendees of the Remembering Our Heroes, 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance event will make patriotic crafts and thank you cards for area first responders and patients at Veterans Administration and Scott Air Force Base hospitals.

BELLEVILLE: 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pitchers Sports Pub and Pizzeria, 104 W. Main St. The restaurant and Str8Up Magazine hosts a benefit concert for the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project. Attendance is free but attendees can make a tax deductible donation to aid military veterans and service members injured on or after Sept. 11, 2001. The concert features bands Old Capital Square Dance Club, EarthSol and Molly Simms and the Bible Belt Sinners.

BELLEVILLE and ST. LOUIS: As part of a weeklong, national 9/11 Week of Service & Remembrance, United Way of Greater St. Louis seeks more than 500 volunteers to do service projects as tribute to victims and heroes of the 9/11 attacks. Volunteers must sign up in advance at www.stlvolunteer.org/stlremembers. Here are two projects in Belleville: The first is through MindsEye, which asks for volunteers in two-hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday to read to those physically unable to read. The second is through Boy Scouts of America, which will have volunteers power wash or paint buildings on Saturday.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS: The Dandy Inn, 1030 Lincoln Highway, offers 15 percent off dine-in food purchases to police officers, firefighters and their families all day Wednesday. The restaurant will also donate part of proceeds from every Fried Taco Platter sold after 4 p.m. Wednesday to BackStoppers, which aids families of deceased emergency service workers. The event features a September 11 Car Cruise at 4 p.m. and pets from the St. Clair County Animal Adoption Center.

COLLINSVILLE: First responders in Madison County will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Cahokia Mounds at 5 p.m. Wednesday Police and firefighters will climb up and down the stairs of Monks Mound during the ceremony, remembering those who climbed the stairs inside the World Trade Center 12 years ago. "The nation is going to mourn; it mourned for a long time and will continue to mourn until we can square up some of these problems in the world," said Collinsville Mayor John Miller, who also is a retired firefighter. "This is just a little bit we can do to remember those who gave their lives that tragic day." The ceremony is open to the public.
